Last week, Jackson Rowe facilitated a site tour with Appian Construction at their Shurgard Self-Storage site in Sutton. A total of 20 students, from South Thames College Group, were given the opportunity to view the site and hear from Site Manager Jay, who shared insights into the construction industry. These included the challenges of managing a steel-frame structure, coordinating multiple subcontractors, the change in health and safety practices, and some of the salaries available to their chosen trades.
Following the tour, the students took part in a classroom session reviewing the project’s plans and drawings. For some, this was their first experience seeing real construction plans, making the session particularly valuable in linking their studies to a live project.
The students were highly engaged throughout, asking thoughtful questions and showing a keen interest in the industry. Feedback was positive, and the college has since been in contact with Jackson Rowe to explore further social value opportunities for similar visits in the future. Site tours like these play an important role in bridging the gap between education and industry, helping to inspire and encourage the next generation of construction professionals.
